He attacked the army of Persians three times in a month. At the first time he slaughtered a half of the army. At the second time he slaughtered a quarter of the army. At the third time he slaughtered 1/11 part of the army. All the rest (280 men) deserted to Nakhijevan. Now, with the number of the rest you must count the number of the Persian army.

Answer: There were 1760 riders before the slaughter.

Second problem: One of my relatives left to Buhl and bought pearls with very good price. When he arrived to Gandzak, he sold the half of the pearls with fifty money for every pearl. Then he went to Nakhijevan and sold the quarter of the pearls with seventy money for every pearl and in Dvin [he sold] with fifty money for every pearl. When he came to Shirak, he had twenty-four pearls. Now, you must simplify, how many pearls he had and what was their price.

Answer: He had 144 pearls and their price was 6720 money.

Third problem: I heard from [my] teacher that robbers entered the treasury of Markanion Trickle and robed a half of the treasure. Treasurers found only 421 cendinars and 3600 dahekans [1 cendinar=7200 dahekans]. Now, you must simplify, how much was the all treasure.

Answer: The treasure was 1686 cendinars.

Fourth problem: The wages of the Saint Sofia friars [ is distributed so]: The deacons get the 1/5 part, the priests get the 1/10 part, the bishops get 200 liters, all the rest get 2000 liters. Now, you simplify, how many liters is the wages of Saint Sofia friars.

Answer: The wages of the friary is about 3200 liters.

Fifth problem: The wages of the officers distributes so. The quarter is given to respectables, the 1/8 part is given to seniors and 150 cendinars is given to another riders. Now, you must simplify, how much is the wages of the officers.

Answer: The wages of the officers is 240 cendinars.

Sixth problem: There was a lettuce in my garden. A roman entered my garden to take a walk. He ate the 1/5 and 1/15 part of the lettuce. I knew that he was greedy and sent him away from my garden. I counted the rest lettuces. There were 110 lettuces. Now, you must simplify, how many lettuces were there and how much did the roman eat.

Answer: There were 150 lettuces and the roman ate 40 lettuces.

Seventh problem: I was in Marmet, in the lands of Kamsarakans. I went to the bank of the river Akhuryan. I saw shoal of fish. I threw a net and caught the half, the quarter and the 1/7 part of the fish. Which one got free from the net, perished to the second-net in which I found 45 ones. Now, you must simplify, how much fish were in the shoal.

Answer: There was 420 fish in the shoal.

Eighth problem: When Armenians were in revolt against Persians, Zorak Kamsarakan killed Suren. One of noble men of Armenians sent an ambassador to the Persian king to tell him about the killing. He [The ambassador] was passing 50 miles in a day. After 15 days Zorak Kamsarakan knew about that and sent his men to catch the ambassador. They were passing 80 miles in a day. Now, you must simplify, when they caught the ambassador.

Answer: They caught him 25 days after Zorak Kamsarakan knew about treachery.

Ninth problem: Kamsarakans were on hunting in Gen. They hunted many animals. They gave me a wild boar. He was very big, so I scaled him. I simplified that his entrails was the quarter of his weight, his head was 1/10 of his weight, his haunches were 1/20 of his weight, his fangs were 1/90 of his weight. His trunk was 212 liters. Now, you must simplify, how much was the wild boar weight.

Answer: The wild boar was 360 liters.

Tenth problem: Near Marmet, in the river Eraskh (Arax) I caught a fish. I scaled it. It simplified that it's head was the quarter of his weight, his tail was 1/6 of his weight, his trunk was 140 liters. Now, you must simplify, how much the fish weight.

Answer: The fish was 240 liters.

Eleventh problem: One merchant passed three towns. In every town he gave the half and 1/3 part of property as a duty. When he was at home, he had only 11 dahekans. Now, you must simplify, how many dahekans he had.

Answer: The merchant had 2376 dahekans.

Twelfth problem: I wanted to make a ship, but I had only three money. I said to my relatives, "Let everyone of you give me something and I'll make a ship". One of them gave me the price of the 1/3 part of the ship, another gave the 1/4 part, someone gave the 1/6 part, another gave the1/7 and one of them gave me the price of the 1/28 part of the ship. So I made a ship. Now , you must simplify, how many dahekans was the ship.

Answer: The ship cost 42 dahekans.

Thirteenth problem: One of my pupils bought picked apples from Kara and wanted to give me. In the way he met three groups of jokers. Every group took the half and the quarter of [the rest] apples. He gave me the rest apples [5 ones]. Now, you must simplify how many apples he had.

Answer: He had 320 apples.

Fourteenth problem: There was a wine in a figuline. There were also three jars. I fill the wine into the jars. One of the jars took the 1/3 part of the all wine, another took the 1/6 part and the last one took the 1/14 part of the wine. The rest wine, which filled into the bowls was 54 pases. Now, you must simplify, how many pases was the all wine.

Answer: The wine was 126 pases.

Fifteenth problem: I had a thoroughbred horse. I sold it. With the quarter of the money I got for the horse I bought cows. With the 1/7 part I bought goats, with the 1/10 part I bought oxen and with the rest 318 dahekans I bought sheep. Now, you must simplify, how many dahekans I got for the horse.

Answer: The price of the horse was 616 dahekans.

Sixteenth problem: I was building a church. I rented a mason, who was putting 140 bricks in a day. 39 days later I rented another mason, who was putting 218 bricks in a day. When the number of the bricks that the second mason put equaled the number of bricks that the first mason put, the work was finished. Now, you must simplify, how many days after [I rented the second mason] the work finished.

Answer: The work finished 70 days after I rented the second mason.

Seventeenth problem: A ship full of wheat was sailing. A whale was pursuing it. Sailors afraid of the whale and dashed the half of the wheat as a food. At the next day they dashed him the 1/5 of the rest wheat. At the third day they dashed him the 1/8 of the rest wheat. At the fourth day they dashed the 1/7 of the rest wheat. When they were at the port, they had 7200 [kayts] wheat. Now, you must simplify, how much wheat they had.

Answer: They had 24000 kayts wheat.

Eighteenth problem: I had a metallic jug, which I broke and made another plates. From the 1/3 part I made a boile, from the 1/4 part I made another boile, from the 1/5 part I made two cups, from the 1/6 part a tray and from 210 drams I made a jar. Now, you must simplify, how much was the weight of metallic jug.

Answer: The metallic jar was 4200 drams.

Nineteenth problem: A man entered three churches. In every church he asked from the God to give him as money as he had and promised to give 25 dahekans. After that he had nothing. Now, you must simplify, how much money he had.

Answer: He had 21+1/2+1/4+1/8 (21.875) dahekans.

Twentieth problem: Hunting-place of the governor of Shirak and Arshakunik, Nerseh Kamsarakan, was in the base of the mountain Artin. One night a herd of deer entered there. Servants have not a trial of hunting. They run to the village Talin and told about that. Kamsarakan with his brothers and noble men hurried to the hunting-place. The slaughter of deer begins. The half of them was caught by tripe, the quarter was discharged an arrow, the young deer, which were the 1/12 of the herd, were caught alive and 360 ones were killed by spear. Now, you must simplify, how many deer were in the herd.

Answer: There were 2160 deer in the herd.

Twenty-first problem: The son of Arshavir, Nerseh Kamsarakan, who was the namesake and ancestor of this Nerseh, wins the war against nomads and takes many prisoners. He presents with the half of the prisoners to the Persian king and the 1/7 part of the another half he gives to his son. Then he returns to his lands. In the way he visits one of the ministers and gives him the 1/8 of the rest prisoners. After that he visits Khoravaran and gives him the 1/14 part of the rest prisoners. When he enters his lands his youngest brother, Hrahat, goes to meet him. He gives him 1/13 part of the rest prisoners. Then Armenian noble men go to meet him and he gives them 1/9 part of the rest prisoners. When he reaches to Vagharshapat he gives the 1/16 part of the rest prisoners to churches. Finally he gives the 1/20 part of the rest prisoners to his elder brother, Sahak. So he gets only 570 men. Now, you must simplify, how many prisoners he took.

Answer: He took 2240 prisoners.

Twenty-second problem: The pharaoh of Egypt was celebrating his birthday. He had a habit to distribute one hundred figulines of wine to everyone of his ten ministers by his merit and position. Now, you must distribute one hundred figulines of wine by climax of dicker.

Answer: First minister gets 1 + 1/2 + 1/5 + 1/10 + 1/55 figulines of wine. Second minister gets 3 + 1/2 + 1/10 + 1/40 + 1/80 figulines of wine. Third minister gets 5 + 1/3 + 1/15 + 1/44 + 1/60 + 1/66 figulines of wine. Fourth minister gets 7 + 1/5 + 1/20 + 1/44 figulines of wine. Fifth minister gets 9 + 1/11 figulines of wine. Sixth minister gets 10 + 1/2 + 1/5 + 1/10 + 1/22 + 1/30 + 1/33 figulines of wine. Seventh minister gets 12 + 1/2 + 1/10 + 1/22 + 1/30 + 1/33 + 1/55 figulines of wine. Eighth minister gets 14 + 1/3 + 1/10 + 1/15 + 1/22 figulines of wine. Ninth minister gets 16 + 1/5 + 1/10 + 1/22 + 1/55 figulines if wine. Tenth minister gets 18 + 1/12 + 1/22 + 1/33 + 1/44 figulines of wine.

Twenty-third problem: There was a cellar in which was two hundred kayts of barley [1 kayt=414720 grains]. Mice ate the all barley. I caught one and punished. He shrived and said, "I ate eighty grains". Now, you must simplify, how many grains of barley were in the cellar and what was the number of the mice that ate the barley.

Answer: There were 82944000 grains in the cellar and the number of the mice that ate the barley was 1036800.

Twenty-fourth problem: There was a basin in Atenk, which had three faucets. The first faucet filled the basin in a hour, second faucet filled the basin in two hours and the third faucet filled the basin in three hours. Now, you must simplify, in what time three faucets could fill the basin.

Answer: All faucets at once could fill the basin in 1/4 + 1/6 + 1/12 + 1/22 [0.54(54)] hour.
